In the beginning of everything God created everything that is unseen and seen by our naked eyes. He created us in order to protect his creation and he ensure as his creation. God made the life of human beings easy but then human beings commit sin and they have been vanished from the easy life God gave them and God sent them to explore and use our brain in order to survive. The way of life of the people before is just simple no technology at all they only totally depend on the creation of God, on their environment. The earth give them everything they need such us the basic needs in order for them to survive they have tools that are made up of sharp things. The way of communication before is oral, they send a messenger in faraway places in order to relay or give the messages to other people.
As days went by our world has been improving from its simplicity, lots of inventions made by the people to help lessen the effort of people to live. Generation to generation the intelligence of the people before has been passed to the people and has been developed in order to create better things, the past serves as the bridge for everything what is here in the present. There are events happened during the industrial revolution especially in the way of communication. The first mechanical computer was created by Charles Babbage in 1822 (computer.com). In 1829, the typographer was made by W.S Burt on the 4th of April (Detroit historical society). Between 1830s and 1840s electrical telegraph was develop by Samuel Morse (history.com). The first telephone was invented on March 10, 1876 by Alexander-Graham Bell (howstuffworks.com).
In 1900s there are also other invention made (tech-faq.com). In 1973, cellphone was invented Dr. Martin Cooper (history.com). In 1991, internet was invented by J.C.R Licklider Tim Berners-Lee (history.com). Google was invented in 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page (time.com). Facebook was invented by Mark Zuckerburg in 2004 (businessinsider.com). In 2005, twitter was invented by Evan Williams and Biz Stone (businessinsider.com). At the same year youtube was invented by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim (tought.com). In 2007, tumblr was invented by David Karp (theguardian.com).
The world today as said is modernized, lots of improvements in communication technology which has broadened the scope of communication through Information and Communication Technologies. Modern technology like two sides of a coin, the other side implies the negative part the other side also implies the positive part. Modern technology helps the people to be more informed/ updated and enlightened with our world developments.
Social media is defined in different ways but with related meanings. Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community based-input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration (Whatls.com). Social media is a catch-all term of variety of internet applications that allow users to create content and interact with each other (Techopedia.com). Social media it is a form of electronic communication through which people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages (Merriam-Webster). Social media are computer- mediated technologies that allow the creating and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks (linked in.com).
The first recognizable social media site is the Six Degrees that is created in 1997 that enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites become popular creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today (smallbiztrends.com). In 2000, internet is everywhere, for the past years there are several social media website that has been created. The social media today consists of thousands of social media platforms, all serving the same but they have slightly different purposes. But then the future of social media is impossible to know but it is clear that it will continue because humans are social animals and maybe they will enhance and improve more as generations pass by.
The use or the function of social media in our modern world is to inform, influence and entertain the people it has been business that put up by the certain people that is useful in today’s era. It updates us with everyday happenings in the world, it influences our behavior and ways of living and it also entertain us with information, ideas and knowledge that we get in different forms. The purpose of social media is to give the information that the people need and let the people also to say their opinion and give them opportunities in some ways.
There are some common features of social media first is social media are interactive Web 2.0 internet –based applications. Second is that user-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos and data generated through all online interactions are the life blood of social media. Third is that, users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed and maintained by the social media organization. Lastly social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user’s profile with those of other individuals and or groups (Linked in.com).
The power of social networking is such that, the number of worldwide users is expected to reach some 2.95 billion by 2020, around a third of earth’s entire population. An estimated 650 million users are expected from China alone and approximately a third of a million from India. The region with the highest penetration rate of social networking is North America, where around 60 percent of the population has at least one social account. As of 2016, 78 percent of the United States population had a social networking profile. In the digital shift. The Philippines has taken the global lead in terms of time spent on social media. The report, called Digital in 2017, showed that Filipinos spent an average of 4 hours and 17 minutes per day on social media against all over other countries (statista.com).
Social media however are used by most people to interact with old and new friends, physical or internet friends and there love ones. The world today is rapidly changing by the evolution of technology, thus technology serves as the best medium to explore and gain lots of ideas and knowledge around us that we are in unfamiliar with. Education today is the one of the important thing to be achieved by the people, so there is a direct relationship exists between social media usage and the academic performances of the students in the school. Academic excellence plays an important role in an individual life, many people around the world are concerned with the ways they could enhance their academic achievement and lots of the students however depend on social media to be advanced and gain more knowledge that can lead them to excel in class. The role of academic achievement as one of the predictors of one’s life success and also in the aspect of academic placement in school to higher institutions as well as the level of employability in one’s career is investable (Kyoshaba, 2009). Academic performances are measured by the performances of the students in school such as examination, other activities given by the school depending on its standard and its curriculum. Holye (1986) argued that schools are established with the aim of imparting knowledge and skills to those who go through them and behind all this is the idea of enhancing good academic performances. Academic achievement is the outcome of education in which it is a long journey of survival of a student like he or she has been locked up in jail and its passport to be free is his or her diploma or degree in finishing his or her studies with the help for those who helped and the technology and social media existence.
However the dark side of social media has resulted in dilemmas such as the setback of real values of life especially among students who form the majority of users interacting through the use of social media. With so many social networking sites displayed on the internet, students are tempted to abandon their home works, projects, activities in the school and reading times they prefer to do chatting online friends, checking their accounts, playing online games, watching online videos or movies, sound trip and others. Many of the students are now addicted to the online rave of the moment with Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, online games etc. Even in classrooms while lecture is going on it has been observed that some of the students are always busy Facebooking etc., hours that should be spent in learning has been set aside by the students for them to focus more in social media, it was also observed that the use of social media affects students use of English and grammar. The students are used to short forms of writing words in their chat rooms like commenting, group chat and others, they forget and use the same in the classrooms example they use things like 4 in place of for, U in place of you, D in place of the, der in place of there etc., there are also shortcut phrases that are commonly used today such as HBD for happy birthday, OMG for oh my God, IDK for I don’t know etc., and this could affect their class assessment or academic performances. Cyberbullying is one of the rampant and arising problem of social media there are lot of victims of this case especially the students. The social media also gives problem to the teachers in personal life just like the students problems if they are using social media improperly. The teachers also are affected if their students have low grades and the issues that his or her students facing because of the use of social media. Social media although has been recognized as an important resource for education today, studies however shows that students use social media for fun, to kill time, to meet friends, to communicate, to be updated and others.
According to Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), social network websites grab attention of the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions including useless chatting. Whereas on the other hand, (Liccardi, Ounnas, Massey, Kinnunen, Midy and Sakar. 2007) reviewed that the students are socially connected with each other for sharing their daily learning experiences and do conversation on several topics. As it was observed by the students itself they spent more than 30 minutes in using social media throughout the day and it is consider as a part of their daily routine in life. The more that students use social media in their daily life routine the more they influence their disposition to studies but not all only majority of them, their friends in social media will begin to exert influence on each other.
